Happy birthday (a week late) to Starship Troopers, which was released on November 7, 1997. Hard to believe it has been 27 years. If it was a baseball player, it would be heading into its peak season.
I loved this crazy movie. We were covering Basil Poledouris’ score for FSM so I attended quite a bit of the recording sessions, probably more than any other film. I love the score and have fond memories of the experience.
I thought the movie would be a huge hit and was surprised when the reception was rather lukewarm. I found it a hilarious and subversive send-up of right-wing ideology but audiences just did connect with the “90210 in space” characters.
The whole thing cracked me up and I’ll be eternally grateful to Verhoeven and his team for spending all that money to make fun of Hollywood blockbusters.
