Back From Vegas

I am back from Vegas where I was at the big annual Creation Star Trek convention (now called Trek to Vegas). The convention wraps up today.

It was fun! Many thanks to the Inglorious Treksperts who did a lot of the programming and had a large presence at the convention. Mark, Daren, Ashley and their team go out of their way to track down Star Trek stars and creators and focus on cool stuff that aren’t just the same-old same-old.

I saw their “Directing Trek” panel where they had Rob Bowman, David Livingston, David Carson, Paul Lynch and Jordan Canning, and let me put it this way—if it’s stuff that I personally haven’t heard before, then hats off, fellas.

I haven’t been to one of these things in maybe a decade, and it had a really positive vibe and celebratory atmosphere that I don’t quite remember. Somebody was telling me that there’s a lot of negativity at Comic Con, with grumpy fans and complaints, but this one was all smiles.

The fans seem extraordinarily well behaved and even though there are rules by necessity, the stars are just sitting there out in the dealers’ hall and it’s all perfectly fine. I think some of the stars and fans have seen each other over so many years that there really is a sense of community.

I also got to see Jay Chattaway and Terri Potts-Chattaway who were selling Terri’s new book about Jay’s life and music, Journey to the Inner Light. Please check this out for an illuminating look at Jay’s remarkable career, not only on Star Trek but as a player and arranger, record producer and feature composer.

Oh, and some time ago I wrote a blog post nitpicking a moment in Strange New Worlds where La’an wears makeup to bed. The actress, Christina Chong, was signing not far from the Treksperts’ table so I could not resist but ask her opinion on this. She pointed out that her character was time-traveling and wouldn’t have makeup removal with her—and, in general, it’s not the kind of show to dwell on such things. Good answer!
