I was sorry to wake up to the sad news that Tracy Tormé has died. We Trekkies knew him a one of the best writers of the initial seasons of Star Trek: The Next Generation.
His episode, “The Big Goodbye,” was a highlight of a lame and bewildering first season, and came at an especially important time: throughout the first dozen episodes, only one other one, “Where No Man Has Gone Before,” was any good.
It was important to see that the show still had the potential for greatness—and “The Big Goodbye” set the stage not only for numerous other Holodeck episodes, but the show’s eventual embrace of postmodern themes of memory and perception.
Tormé was also outspoken in the various Trek making-of magazine articles and books, and seemed like he really cared.
