This is cool—the new Star Trek: The Motion Picture 4K Blu-ray has deleted scenes.
Not just the same deleted scenes that we’ve seen in the TV cut, the director’s cut, on DVDs, etc., but new “scene fragments” and alternates that we’ve heard about for decades, but never actually seen.
Above is the sickbay scene with Kirk, Spock and Bones, with some extra lines—although, unfortunately, there is no sound. (I’d be pretty confident the sound exists, it’s just that it would have to be retrieved out of numerous dialogue rolls in deep storage and nobody wanted to deal with it.)
This movie was made pretty much in a state of chaos, with numerous parties writing and rewriting scenes up until the last minute. So it’s not surprising that there are lots of alternates and outtakes—and that they were cut for a good reason: they’re not that interesting, have redundant story information, etc.
But Robert Wise’s compositions are always beautiful to look at it, and it’s fun to see these at long last.
I was thrilled to finally see the deleted scene of the phaser weilding security guard getting zapped by the V'Ger probe on the bridge.
